How to run a riddle game for family night
Short answer: Pick one reader, read each riddle twice, give everyone 30 seconds, and score 2 points for a solve without a hint and 1 point with a hint. Explain every answer before moving on. Ten riddles take about 20 minutes.
What you need
3 to 8 players, 10 riddles with answers (one phone is enough), paper for scores and a timer. A mix of easy "What am I?" riddles and one or two logic teasers keeps every age involved.
1. Choose a riddle master
One person reads and keeps the answers. Rotate the role every round so kids get to be the one who knows the answer — they love it.
2. Read twice, then start the timer
Read the riddle slowly, pause, and read it again. Start a 30-second timer. Players whisper or write their answer so the fastest person does not spoil it for others.
3. Score with hints in mind
2 points for a correct answer without help. If nobody gets it, give a hint (the first letter, or two choices) and the next correct answer scores 1 point. This is the same idea Riddlit uses: solving with choices is worth half.
4. Level the field for younger kids
Give children under 8 the first letter for free, or let them answer with a drawing. Pair a young child with a grandparent as a team.
5. Always explain the answer
After each riddle, the reader says in one sentence why the answer works: "A river has banks, but not the money kind." This turns groans into laughs and teaches kids how wordplay works.
6. End with a homemade riddle
For the last round, each player writes one riddle about an object in the room. Others guess. Kids usually make the funniest ones.
Sample riddle to start
"Every winter, four brothers share one room while their short, stubby brother gets his own. Where do they live?" Answer: in a mitten — four fingers together, the thumb alone.
