How to memorize times tables fast

Short answer: don't drill all 81 facts equally. Most of the 1–9 multiplication table is already easy or repeats itself (3×7 is 7×3). Find the handful of facts you actually miss, practice those first for 3 minutes a day, and test yourself with a time limit once they feel easy.

1. Cross off what you already know

The 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s follow obvious patterns, and the 9s have the finger trick (the digits of 9×n add up to 9). Because multiplication is commutative, learning 3×7 also gives you 7×3. That leaves roughly 15–20 genuinely hard facts, mostly in the 6s, 7s and 8s.

2. Practice the misses, not the list

Reciting a table from top to bottom lets you lean on the previous answer. Mixed questions force real recall. Note every fact you get wrong or answer slowly, and put those at the front of the next session.

3. Keep sessions short and daily

Three minutes every day works better than half an hour once a week, because each session is a fresh retrieval. Stop while it still feels easy.

4. Add speed last

Once you answer correctly, add a time limit per question or switch from multiple choice to typing the answer. Recall that takes under 3 seconds is what makes mental math feel effortless.

Doing it with Timesy

Timesy tracks every fact you miss and brings it back first. Pick "Weak tables", start a 3-minute practice from the home screen or widget, then tap "Retry missed" after the round. The mastery grid shows each table's accuracy, so you can see which tables are already done.

FAQ

How long does it take to memorize the times tables?

With 3–5 minutes a day focused on missed facts, most learners know the 1–9 tables reliably within a few weeks. Short daily sessions beat one long session.

Should I learn the tables in order?

Not necessarily. Learn the easy ones first (1, 2, 5, 10, 9), then spend your time on the facts you actually miss.

Do adults need to memorize them too?

Fast recall of multiplication facts makes mental math, percentages and estimating much easier at any age.
