How to See Deleted Chat Messages via Notification History

Short answer: when a WhatsApp, KakaoTalk or other chat message arrives, its text appears in a notification. If notification history is recording at that moment, the text is saved on your phone and stays there even if the sender deletes the message later.

Set it up before you need it

1. Turn on Android's notification history or install a notification log app. 2. Allow Notification access when asked. 3. In the chat app, make sure notifications are on and message previews are shown, otherwise the notification only says "New message".

When someone deletes a message

Open your history and look for the chat or the sender. The text from the notification is there with the time it arrived. Android's built-in history keeps it for 24 hours only, so a log app is better if you check later.

Limits to know

Only messages that arrived as notifications after recording started can be seen. Photos, voice messages and attachments are not saved. Muted chats and chats you had open on screen may not create a notification.

Doing it with Notitrail

Notitrail groups saved notifications by app and then by conversation, so group chats and 1:1 chats stay apart and a busy group never buries a private message. Search one word to find it. Everything stays on your phone, with no subscription.

FAQ

Can I read a WhatsApp message after the sender deleted it?

Only if it arrived as a notification while notification history was recording. The text from the notification stays even after the sender deletes it.

Why is only part of the message saved?

A notification only carries a preview. Very long messages may be cut, and photos, voice notes and attachments are not included.

Does this work for muted chats?

No. If a chat does not show notifications, there is nothing to save.
