Good first guesses for 5-letter word puzzles
Short answer: start with a word made of the most common letters, with two or three vowels and no repeated letter. CRANE, SLATE, TRACE, AROSE and STARE are all strong openers.
What makes a first guess good
- Common letters. E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S and N appear in a large share of everyday 5-letter words.
- No repeats. Five different letters test five possibilities instead of four.
- A mix of vowels and consonants. Two or three vowels usually tell you the shape of the word quickly.
Guess two: cover new ground
If the first guess gave little, play a second word with five new common letters. After CRANE, try TOILS or MOIST. After SLATE, try CORNY or ROUND. Two guesses then cover ten different letters.
Guess three and later: use what you know
Keep the teal letters in place, move the gold letters to a new spot, and avoid the slate ones. Say the pattern out loud, for example "_ R _ N E", and list words that fit before you type.
Do not forget repeated letters
Words like SPEED or LLAMA repeat a letter. If you are stuck with few options left, try a word with a double letter.
FAQ
Is there one perfect starting word?
No. Any word with common letters and no repeats gives you a strong first clue. Rotating a few good openers keeps the game fun.
Should my first word have many vowels?
Two or three vowels is a good balance. AROSE tests four vowels, CRANE tests common consonants too.
What if the first guess is all gray?
That is useful: five letters are ruled out. Pick a second word with completely new common letters, like TOILS after CRANE.
